Many people in the Western world immediately picture a woman laying on a
bed when “giving birth” is mentioned – this is known as the lithotomy position.
In actual fact, this position is one of the worst to birth in, although
it is unfortunately quite common. It was originally started by King
Louis XIV who enjoyed watching his mistresses give birth…


What other positions are there?

Various squatting positions, sitting on a birthing stool, laying on your side, even laboring in water are all options.

also on all fours, not sure how it would help exactly…

Is that thing about Louis XIV really true? I thought it was just because it’s easiest access for the midwife/doctor and the advent of epidurals immobilizing birthing women.
